MatthewsCharley11/19/1883The Republic, Nov. 19, 1883:

Charley Matthews, the man who was so frightfully burned last Friday night, died yesterday at the county infirmary. Before he died his limbs became drawn and stiffened, the cords and muscles having been burned to a crisp. To the last he denied being drunk, but the fact that an empty whisky flask was found at his side when he was discovered Saturday morning dispels the least shadow of a doubt that the contents of the bottle did the work. Word was sent to his brother in Michigan, but as yet no response has been received. The unfortunate man was buried yesterday in the cemetery of the poor farm.
