Swartz, Joseph Godfrey, Miller's Company, Rockbridge Co. Virginia Reserves

Prof. (and Pvt.) Joseph Godfrey Swartz, b. Mar 18 1847 in Virginia, d. May 1 1887 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Enlisted Apr 18, 1864. Served in Miller's Company, Rockbridge County, Virginia Reserves Infantry. This unit was also known as the "Boys Company" or Junior Reserves. Saw action in the Valley Campaign of 1864. He entered Roanoke College in 1869 or 1870. 1st student at Roanoke College to have an Indian roommate. B.A. Washington and Lee University in 1873. Brian F Swartz says he earned a Doctorate in Theology. Married to Margaret Jean Ochiltree June 29, 1874. She met him right after the civil war when she was handing food to both armies. He became a Professor at Virginia Military Institute and also a Principal in Fredericksburg, VA. Three sons. Buried in High Bridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery, VA.
