Bishop William C.R. Sheridan, 1989 and 1998

William Cockburn Russell Sheridan (1917-2005). Sheridan was the fifth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana. He was a native of New York City and grew up in Baltimore. He studied at Nashotah House Seminary and served two parishes, St. Paul’s at Gas City and St. Thomas at Plymouth, before his election as bishop in 1972. He was the only priest of the diocese to be elected as its bishop. He was widely admired for his strong pastoral qualities. While opposed to the ordination of women, he later accepted their ordination near the end of his life. The collection contains two separate Sheridan interviews. The first was conducted on 10 May 1989 by the Rev. Robert Center at the home of Bishop and Mrs. Sheridan near Culver, Indiana. The second was conducted in two parts by Ryan Taylor and John Beatty on 28 February 1998.
