  • Notes
    • Fred Maltby Warner was born in Hickling, Nottinghamshire, ENG and came to MI with his family, when he was 3 months of age. Fred had one brother who remained in ENG and two sisters that came to Livonia, MI, also. Soon after arrival, Fred's mother died. His father sent the girls to live with neighbors and Fred was adopted by the Warners. Mr. P. Dean Warner was a successful merchant and a member of the MI legislature.

Fred was educated through the Farmington School District, graduating from high school, at the age of 14 and attended MI Agricultural College (later known as MI State University) for one term. Afterwards, he returned home and took up clerking in his parent's store. Upon turning 21, in 1886, Mr. Warner turned the store over to him and Fred married Martha M. Davis.

Twenty sixth Governor of MI 1905-1910

Martha was the daughter of Samuel and Susan Groff Davis of Farmington Twp. Her family owned a large farm near Farmington. After children were born to Fred and Martha, the elder Warners gave their large home to Fred and Martha. This home, would later become the Farmington Historical Museum. The household was happy, active and attracted the young people of the community. Martha was not only a great enfluence in the lives of her children, she became an influential partner to Fred and helped him, in running everything, but the dairy business.

By 1889, Fred decided to go into the cheese business and opened a factory near his 250 acre farm, on the edge of Farmington. By 1906, he had more then a dozen of these cheese factories in operation, in other parts of the state. He was among the early proponients for pasteurizing of milk. While the family and the cheese industry grew, Fred Warner was climbing the politcal ladder. Fred made himself a advocate of Republican principles, policies and candidates. He not only served as the village president, but was a state senator for 4 years. He became secretary of state in 1900. After serving for two terms of this office, he became governor in 1905, at the age of 39, the state's youngest governor.

Governor Warner served the state for 16 years, as the state's 1st three term governor. Afterwards, returned to Farmington and tended his banking, real estate businesses and farming interests. Martha devoted her time to Farmington's community affairs. Governor Warner suffered from uremic poisoning and died while in Orlando, FL, where he was spending the winter, in hopes of finding a cure for his illness, April 17, 1923 at 57 years of age. His body was shipped to Farmington and was buried Friday, April 20, in Oakwood Cemetery.
