The Western Americana collection documents the history of human activity in North America primarily west of the Rocky Mountains from the earliest days to the present time. The Indian sub-collection contains two sections, General and Military and the Indians. The General section includes government documents relating to laws and treaties, Indian land cessions, and removals from land; numerous volumes of personal observations and documentary accounts concerning Indian customs, games,lore, ceremony, legends, music, sign language, autobiographies, etc.;The section on Military and the Indians offers many first-hand accounts of military campaigns against Indian tribes of the Southwest, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, and throughout the West.
