The Wounded Knee incident began February 27, 1973 when the town of Wounded Knee, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation was seized by followers of the American Indian Movement (AIM). In part they were protesting the tribal president and council's having made a land-use decision to lease nearly one-eighth of the reservation's mineral-rich lands, accusations of corruption and intimidation by the president, and issues of US failure to fulfill treaties with Indian peoples. The AIM activists controlled the town for 71 days while the United States Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, and other law enforcement agencies cordoned off the town. The activists chose the site of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre for its symbolic value. Both sides were armed and shooting was frequent. Two AIM activists were killed and an FBI agent paralyzed in related shootings (Source: Wikipedia, Wounded Knee Incident).
